SV Blue Turtle
Blue Turtle is our current boat - she is a 1978 CSY 44 Walkover, a heavily built bluewater cruiser that was originally designed for the charter market by CSY (Caribbean Sailing Yachts). CSYs were overbuilt, as Cruising World notes: her hull is hand-laid fiberglass laminate, 9 layers deep, with no balsa or wood core in her decks, and the hull is nearly an inch thick above the waterline.
She has bulwarks that run down the length of her sidedecks, significantly improving safety at sea, and the hull-to-deck joint is protected by a beautiful teak caprail. Blue Turtle is the shoal draft model, drawing just under 5’, and she displaces around 35,000lbs - with 400 gallons of freshwater tankage, and 100 gallons of fuel.
Inside, she has beautiful teak joinery, a spacious aft cabin, and a large forward berth. Each have their own private heads, and the cockpit has a full enclosure.
Cutter-rigged, we replaced her sails, and carry a boom-furling main, a staysail, a high-cut yankee, and have a gennaker in storage beneath the v-berth. At purchase we re-rigged her, replaced the chainplates, and upgraded all electronics with a full suite of Raymarine kit. We added new LED lighting throughout, including on the mast, and also replaced her primary winches with new Lewmars.
Her galley features a double-sink, a new Dickinson Mediterranean gas stove, and copious storage. She has a triple-compartment AC-powered refrigerator, which stays cold for days without power.
Her engine is a 2023-rebuilt Perkins 2.436, and we replaced her coupler, stuffing box, prop shaft, and cutless bearing, as well as upgraded her prop to a folding 24” MaxProp.
